TunisiaTourismTV – Guermessa was once an impregnable citadel located on the top of an abrupt rock in the mountainous region of the
Dahar, in the Tunisian South-East.
The old village is very large. It extends on the edges of a steep peak and a mountain ridge.
The houses are partly dug in the rock: the first inhabitants of Guermessa lived in cave dwellings. Some houses have a second floor for storing food reserves.
In Guermessa, there are survivals of very old traditional practices: a children cemetery, carvings and markings that celebrate weddings…
Along with
Chenini and Douiret, it is one of the most spectacular spots of the area of
Tataouine.
